SMWS 59.50 - Comfortable in the Chesterfield

The SMWS 59.50 Comfortable in the Chesterfield is an 30 year old whisky at 54,9% from the Teaninich Distillery. Distilled at 8 November 1983, matured in a refill ex-bourbon hogshead and 274 bottles produced.

The nose has some waxy and dried fruit notes. Lemon freshness and soft oak notes. Dark heather honey, leather and prunes. Notes of malt, nuts, dry spices and coffee.

Ginger, lemon zest and creamy vanilla sweetness on the palate at first, then after the strong lemon and red pepper have faded away it makes way for sweet fresh and dried fruit notes. It is not as waxy and dry as the nose indicated first. It shows some of those notes but very shortly present. It brings more sweet and fruity notes mixed with soft mocha and cumin. It has a honeyed middle length finish with a light feeling of pencil shavings and crème brulee. I find it a bit strange dram, but pleasant for sure. Bit too sharp on the lemon notes looking at the palate for me. Scoring me a 7,5 out of 10.
