Caol Ila 12 year old

Day 12 of The Whisky Advent Calender from the guys at Drink By The Dram is a Caol Ila 12 year old bottled at 43%. The nose has some fresh green herbal notes mixed with sweet creamy red fruit smoothie. There is also some tar, smoke, mint and honey in it detectable.

On the palate I directly find the smoke mixed with the BBQ flavours I most of the time get with Caol Ila. I always find some smokey ham in a good marinade. This time a roast that has a mixture of red pepper, tomato, fresh Italian herbs and mustard seeds on it. Sweet, soft spices and dried apricots. There is something ashy mixed with the sweet fruit notes like red apple, banana and stewed pears.

The finish is a bit dry and short. The smoked ham mixed with vanilla and tannin dryness stays in the end. Then after some sips it surprised me a bit with giving me chocolate chip cookies, caramel and lush cake notes. But just shortly all the way in the end of it...  It is a soft balanced dram that is sweet and fresh, but also a bit meaty and smoky. Scoring it an 7,5 out of 10. Thanks to the people from Drink By The Dram for providing us with this sample in the Advent Calender.
