Old Pulteney - Duncansby Head - Tasting Notes
We participated in a twitter tasting where the new Old Pulteney Travel Retail 'Lighthouse' series was shared with a few lucky people.
In this series was the Duncansby Head. This is named after the Duncansby Head lighthouse, which is located slightly further north then the Noss Head Lighthouse.
This one is matured in a combination of ex-bourbon casks and Spanish ex-sherry casks. Bottled at 46% ABV, and non chill-filtered and natural color, the way we like it. Price is £44.99 for a 1 liter bottle.
This one has in the tasting some common tones with the Noss Head, and has the same dry finish, but not so heavy as the Noss Head, and must say that that makes me like this one better.
The nose is filled with sweet and subtle tones. Fresh, citrus, minty, chocolate, sweet, orange, vanilla, raisin, a hint of wood, honey, plums. Very subtle but full.
When tasting first you come across a bitter caramel, but that quickly makes place for a warm and sweet palate. Vanilla, raisin, citrus, pistachio, chocolate, cookie dough, apricots and a bit of salt. A thicker palate then on the Noss Head.
The finish is long, and has sweet tones of fruit and raisins, but with a hint of wood, bit dry. But then in the end the raisins win this game and linger on. I gave this a good 7... More balanced this one...
