Glenfiddich - 21

The Glenfiddich 21 year old, finished in casks that once contained Caribbean rum. This expression spend four months finishing in Gran Reserva barrels. Lovely warm, fruity, rich and sweet dram.

Sweet nose with notes of fudge, vanilla pods, raisin, pepper, fresh ginger, warm spices, rum flavours, honey, and a lot of fruits like banana and citrus... Hint of leather, some wood notes and red apples. Figs, cream and a rich warm sweet and spicy feel to it.

Creamy and sweet palate, notes of chili pepper, warm, honey, toffee, chocolate, vanilla, raisin, fruits, figs, banana, lime. An intriguing and balanced palate... The ginger and spices flow beautiful through the sweet fruit aroma's with some fresh grapefruit and mint freshness. Warm, sweet, balanced and a good length finish. Warm chocolate cake with a fudge filling. Scoring this one an 8 out of 10. Quite like the rum influence here that comes through. Has a bit tropical twist to it, and is full of flavours. Bit chew able whisky. Very nice...

UPDATE

At the Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival they give out Whisky Awards after a blind tasting is first done by a small panel and then the shortlisted whiskies in three different categories are judged blind by the visitors of the festival.

The winning expressions were served in the #Dram16Winners Twitter Tasting on the 15th of June. We all were presented by the following drams; Glen Grant 10, Glenfiddich 12, Glen Moray 16, Glenfiddich 18, Cragganmore 25 and the Glenfiddich 21.

The Glenfiddich 21 was the last one in the line up and gave me another chance to have a look at this great whisky. Almost a year after making my earlier notes I am curious to see what I can find in it this time.

Nose is sweet and full of vanilla, dried banana, cream buns with way to much powdered sugar on top. Custard pudding, red berries, strawberries, sweet raisin bread and sugar bread. The palate is warm, sweet and fruity. Honey, dried fruits, fresh fruits, tropical fruits, fruit jelly, fruit jam, orchard fruits... well, you get the point. It is very fruity. Shortbread, mint, banana, oranges, raisin, toffee, spices and ginger. A medium length finish with again that sweet fruity and toffee feeling. Keeping to my earlier score of an 8 out of 10. Lovely dram!
