Langatun - Old Bear - Tasting Notes

From Langatun I enjoyed a sample of the "Old Bear" expression. This is a tribute to Jakob Baumberger who, in 1857, founded a distillery on his father's farm and also took over a small brewery as well. During the following period the brand logo of his brewery was a bear, the "Old Bear".

It is brewed and distilled in the same way as the "Old Deer" but with peated barley malt. It is aged in oak casks previously used for the maturation of French red wine from the Chateauneuf-du-Pape area. Bottled at 40% but also produced at 64% cask strength.

Nose
Wood fire, vanilla, sweet, dried figs, dried apricots, chocolate, caramel, raisin, ginger bread, herbal, white pepper, mint, apples and fruit.

Palate
From the nose it transfers also on the palate with sweet rich fruit, banana, red apple, black berries, light dry earthy note, cinnamon, creamy, honey and a bit liquerish.

Finish
Medium length, sweet, honey and bit chocolate with some dry cinnamon notes.

Score
A good 7 out of 10. Very nice light, but full dram, with balanced sweet notes. Thanks Helvetia Spirits for sharing the sample with us to have a better taste.
