Gordon & MacPhail - Connoisseurs Choice - Tormore 1997/2014

Gordon & MacPhail send over a #WoodMTW sample of Tormore whisky in their Connoisseurs Choice range. It is distilled in 1997 and bottled in 2014 at 46% from 1st fill Bourbon barrels. On the nose loads of apples, vanilla, raisins and toffee sweetness. It is a fruity nose with tangerines, lemon, pear and sweet fig jam. Also some spices like cinnamon and a bit of some roasted (bit dusty) cereals...

From the palate I get some spices at first with black and red pepper. Fruity also like the nose but with some heavy notes of dark concentrated cassis and cranberry between the fruit sweetness of red summer and apples, banana and peaches. It has something sour underneath almost. The heavier fruity notes cover it all a bit too much for my taste and make it difficult to find a balance in it. I added some water to it to see if it would change. The nose was more or less the same but the palate opens up a bit more. More fruity, but it also reveals a stronger tobacco note with prunes, citrus thyme and mint freshness. Medium length finish. Not a lover of this independent bottling of this distillery sadly. But that is just me... Scoring it an 7 out of 10.
